Oils - FAQ

Can I use essential oils on my cat?

In a word – No! Cats and essential oils, in my educated opinion, do not mix!  Cats cannot metabolize oils in the same way dogs and humans can.  They are sensitive to phenolics and other chemical components found in essential oils. A cat’s liver does not have the necessary enzymes to break down such substances so they will build up in the body.  A very good resource for more information on pets and essential oils is the book Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell.

I have cats! Can I use oils on myself and keep them safe?

I can tell you what I do. I store all my oils safely away from my cats who are notorious for stealing lovely bottles that roll. When I use oils on myself I do not apply them near the cats and I stay away from them (do not pick them up or handle them in any way) for at least an hour.  I do not use a diffuser or any sort to put the scent into the air in my home.

Can I use essential oils on my dogs?

Frankly that depends. Dogs that have health issues, especially dogs that seizure, not without professional guidance. Again the book recommended above may be able to guide you more extensively as to what oils are safe for Fido and what oils to avoid. Please do not use essential oils on pregnant dogs!

Are there oils that are not safe for humans to use in aromatherapy?

In my opinion, yes.  Those oils include (but are not limited to) bitter almond, boldo leaf, calamus, horseradish, mugwort, pennyroyal, rue, southernwood, tansy, wormwood.  For more complete information I suggest checking the book list at the end of the FAQ page or on line data.

I’m pregnant. Can I still get a blend from you?

No. I have a list of at least 30 oils that should be avoided when pregnant. Best to wait until after pregnancy and after breast feeding for a formulation.

What is a carrier oil and why do I have to use one?

Most essential oils in their pure form are too concentrated to use directly on the skin. Carrier oils such as jojoba dilute the concentration and make the essential oils more not only go further, but decrease the chances of sensitivity. Always patch test your formulation before using on your body.

How do I use my formulation? Do I wear it?

I suggest sniffing the bottle first and seeing how you like it and how you react to it. If you do not have cats, dogs that are sensitive to certain oils, pregnant household members or health compromised persons in your living environment, then defusing is one way to use the oils. You can also wear them. Never rub them on - pat gently. Friction/heat changes the oils.

How often should I get a new formulation from you?

It is different for everyone. If you think you are ready to have a new formulation, I suggest e-mailing me and saying that you had one done and think you are ready for a new one. I can check the energy and if the answer is yes then we can proceed with a new formulation. Some people need one within a few months, others once a year will be fine. Sometimes we go through something dramatic in our lives and a different formulation would be in order. You may find that it is for short term use only and then you will go back to the original formulation. There is no set answer to this question because everyone is unique! If unsure, just ask me!

I would like to learn more about essential oils. What books do you recommend?

I have a library of over fifty books just on essential oils. Picking out a few good places to start is a challenge! Anything by Jeanne Rose is a wonderful place to start, especially  The Aroma Therapy Book. The Art of Aromatherapy by Robert B. Tisserand is lovely as is Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell.
